Mondi launches opaque paper medical inserts with carbon-neutral option
30 Nov 2021 --- Mondi is launching an opaque paper for inserts of medications, leaflets, manuals and legal text applications called IQ Extralight.
The opaque paper targets the uncoated premium segment, offering “excellent” printability and folding performance. It is optimized for web and sheet-fed offset printing and produced in Austria at Mondi’s Neusiedler paper mill.
IQ Extralight is also FSC-certified, has a food safety certification and is optionally available as carbon-neutral. It is part of the Green Range, Mondi’s umbrella trademark for environmentally sustainable paper solutions.
The new paper is now available in folio and reels in 40, 45, 50 and 60 g/m² across Europe.
According to Innova Market Insights, 71% of global consumers perceive paper’s recyclability as either “good” or “excellent.”
Productive print runs
IQ Extralight delivers high productivity print runs due to its optimal printability and runnability. Moreover, the optimized folding performance of the new opaque paper ensures trouble-free processing through its folding properties and high stiffness, including a high luminescence factor for automatic scanning.
These attributes make IQ Extralight an ideal solution for clients requiring a high standard in both web and offset printing, the paper and packaging supplier says.
Meanwhile, the solution’s high opacity guarantees high readability, supporting the automated quality control through its “outstanding” sheet formation.
“We aim to constantly produce high-quality products that not only meet the evolving needs of our clients but are also sustainable by design,” comments Johannes Klumpp, marketing and sales director at Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper.
“With our new IQ Extralight, we offer a high-quality product to the uncoated premium segment in opaque paper and enable our clients to take their web and sheet-fed offset printing machines to a new, even more efficient level.”
Mondi’s fiber-based focus
Mondi continues to push the boundaries of fiber-based packaging as part of its “paper where possible, plastic when useful” strategy.
Ahead of Interpom 2021, experts from Mondi and its partners Rovema and VDH Packaging Creations discussed their development of perforated potato bags from kraft paper.
At FachPack 2021, Mondi and machine manufacturer Rovema unveiled a food-grade paper pillow bag for frozen food.
In South Africa, Mondi and Taurus Packaging developed a wet strength paper shopping bag with the potential to prevent up to 2 million plastic bags from entering the waste stream in the country every month.
Meanwhile, a life cycle assessment found Mondi’s paper pallet wrapper Advantage StretchWrap produces 62% lower greenhouse gas emissions than virgin plastic stretch film.
The company also equipped French Group LSDH’s Les Crudettes salads with functional barrier paper packaging made from 95% fiber, replacing its previous plastic bags with a solution recyclable in France.
