The On-Pack Recycling Label (OPRL) scheme will celebrate its fifth birthday in the spring, with the label now recognised by two in three shoppers.
The scheme, operated by the British Retail Consortium (BRC), lets shoppers know which packaging can be recycled. The most recognised label is the ‘widely recycled’ label, with 70% of those who recognise it automatically putting the relevant piece of packaging into their recycling collection.
The scheme has over 155 members, including major retailers and brands, with the label appearing on over 75,000 product lines.
Jane Bevis, Chair of OPRL Ltd, said: “Reaching such a high level of consumer recognition in such a short period of time is a real achievement and justifies the backing our founding members gave the label.
“Manufacturers and retailers across all sectors and of all sizes are using the OPRL label to engage their customers in really practical and important environmental action. Clearly customers are responding to that call to action.”
