SONOCO has gone the extra inch to further open up the global market for its Ultraseal membrane tops by adding a six-inch diameter version to the four and five-inch tops currently available in the series. The 603 membrane top for foods and non-foods has Ultraseal's characteristic lightweight peelable paper/foil construction "with the exceptional performance required for filling operations and distribution" says Sonoco. For use with composite or metal cans, it provides a barrier, to moisture, oxygen and aroma that is rated "excellent". The smooth white top also serves as a branding or promotional tool as it can be random printed. In practice, the consumer simply grips the tab and pulls the membrane, which tears safely away from the package in one piece without leaving any residual material. There is also a 603 top with a one-way valve allowing carbon dioxide to escape and keeping oxygen out, specifically for fresh roasted coffee. A foil top with a waffle-like surface adhered to a metal rim is yet another option.
