Südpack Medica expands French plant for sterile pharma packaging

(Image credit: Südpack).Südpack Medica has opened its expanded plant in Coulmer, France. The site aims to deliver enhanced capacity for the production of high-quality primary packaging for pharmaceuticals and sterile barrier systems for medical devices and diagnostic applications.
The expansion supports high-volume production under cleanroom conditions across the entire process chain, from film production to the finished pouch. Südpack says the site ensures consistent high quality, security of supply, and reliability.
“The expansion underscores Südpack’s strong commitment to the Orne region and to Europe. It is also a direct response to steadily growing demand from the medical device, pharmaceutical, and sterile products industries for film and packaging concepts that meet the most stringent requirements for quality, process control, safety, particulate cleanliness, sterility, and regulatory compliance,” says Südpack Medica.
Advancing on alternative solutions
Südpack Medica highlights that the facility plays “a major role in developing EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation-compliant solutions for the life sciences sector,” including recyclable mono-PE concepts engineered to replace conventional polyamide and PE laminates.
As part of the expansion, the plant nearly doubled the size of its ISO Class 7 and 8 cleanroom production areas. Production at the Coulmer site focuses on the MedGuard product line, which includes pouch systems and other packaging concepts for applications such as implants, surgical kits, wound care products, and surgical textiles.
The site also produces header bags developed for large-volume medical devices that undergo ethylene oxide sterilization.
Earlier this year, Südpack Medica introduced MedHub, a service for consumers to order high-quality, pre-made medical pouches in standard sizes and defined batch quantities.
Previously, Südpack Medica collaborated with Dow and life science research and biopharmaceutical company Sartorius to manufacture bioprocessing bags, which were said to be essential for the production and transportation of vaccines.
