The Spirit of Harrogate has recently increased its exclusive range of craft spirits with the addition of the luxurious Slingsby Navy Strength gin. This brings to four the premium spirits they offer which include Slingsby Gin, the increasingly popular Slingsby Rhubarb Gin and Slingsby Vodka, all of which are unified by their stunning glass packaging. Launched during Cowes Week 2016, Slingsby Navy Strength Gin is stronger and richer than the original variant with an ABV of 57%, giving it great body and intensity whilst still retaining our classically smooth finish.
During the 18th century, the Royal Navy would carry Gin at 57% ABV on board. Whilst being stored below deck near the gun powder, it was discovered that the powder would still light even if it was wet with this strength of Gin. The quartermasters could easily test it with the gun powder to make sure that it had not been adulterated, hence the term “100 Degrees Proof.” Officers were given a daily ration of gin, whereas for the ordinary sailors it was rum. When they mixed the gin ration with the daily ration of lime cordial (Roses) to prevent scurvy, they created the Gimlet.
However, when they mixed this with their daily ration of ground cinchona bark, sugar, local spices, lime cordial and water, the world famous G&T was inadvertently born. Amy McLeod, Marketing Manager for Slingsby says: “We wanted to grow the Slingsby brand, whilst keeping its integrity and quality. This is a very exciting time for the gin and with The Slingsby range we feel we are able to offer wonderful premium spirits which are steeped in rich heritage which makes them the automatic choice for the discerning drinker.” For additional information visit wslingsby website.
