Berry bpi combines post-consumer and post-industrial plastic for virgin-quality 50% recycled film
12 Oct 2021 --- Berry bpi packaging solutions has incorporated up to 50% recycled content into its NorDiVent form, fill and seal (FFS) film. Significantly, this incorporation comes “without any compromise in overall strength and moisture protection performance,” according to the company.
The film can now be manufactured using Berry bpi’s Sustane recycled polymer, produced from a combination of post-industrial and post-consumer recycled plastic to achieve a standard of material comparable to virgin polymer.
“This is an important development that underlines our technical capabilities,” says Frank Heseding of Berry bpi packaging solutions. He highlights effective product protection, which minimizes unnecessary waste, is “in itself an important sustainability benefit.”
“However, the incorporation of recycled content with no performance disadvantage is another significant achievement in our continuing drive to develop solutions supporting our customers’ sustainability goals.”
The NorDiVent film provides a long-term, dust-free solution for the filling and packing of all types of powdered products, including chemicals and construction, while food-safe blends are also available for food applications.
The NorDiVent film is fully waterproof and ensures air is released dust-free, offering effective moisture protection for products needing to be kept dry and enabling packs to be stored outdoors.
The solution’s high-tear resistance provides further product protection and avoids spillages and product waste throughout the supply chain. A variety of options, including anti-static, enable the film to cope with the most challenging applications and products.
The film quality also allows printing in up to ten colors for creating impactful branding and maximizing on-shelf presence.
Berry in the news
This June, Berry bpi installed what is reportedly the first wash plant and recycling facility in the UK to recycle both flexible and rigid plastics. The new state-of-the-art operation at Berry’s Heanor, Derbyshire factory will increase the company’s recycling capacity by approximately 1,200 metric tons per year.
Sourcing material from both household and industrial waste and utilizing an advanced purification process, the plant produces high-quality and consistent recyclate that can be used in various industrial and consumer rigid and flexible applications, such as storage boxes and collation shrink films.
Throughout the pandemic, Berry bpi invested in new equipment to provide localized production and supply of much-needed PPE for NHS workers. Berry bpi is a long-standing supplier to the NHS, currently producing the majority of clinical waste sacks used in UK hospitals, the company indicates.
