Catalent’s dual-chamber capsule combines “hero” ingredients for topical applications
11 Feb 2021 --- Catalent is launching CosmoPod Duo, a softgel capsule for the delivery of topical skin treatments.
Based on the company’s CosmoPod unit-dose twist-off capsule technology, the new capsule features segregated compartments to accommodate two formulations into a single twist-off solution.
“This latest innovation will support consumer health and beauty brands in bringing a wider choice of products to the market,” says Dr. Aris Gennadios, president, softgel and oral technologies at Catalent.
“The CosmoPod Duo capsule offers consumers many benefits, including a biodegradable, non-animal plant-based shell, as well as superior portability and functionality, especially for on-the-go application.”
Catalent is a global provider of delivery technologies, development and manufacturing solutions for drugs, biologics, cell and gene therapies and consumer health products.
Combining hero ingredients
CosmoPod Duo allows for the simultaneous application of treatments that combine hero ingredients typically not compatible together, the company explains. This includes ingredients that have a shorter shelf life when combined or two complementary ones.
The twist-off functionality allows precision application and offers benefits across a range of consumer health products, including topical formulas for skin, hair and body care.
The CosmoPod Duo capsule is hermetically sealed to help protect formulations from light and oxidation and to improve stability compared to traditional beauty applications. The capsule is derived from a special grade of natural carrageenan, sustainably-sourced from seaweed, ensuring consistent performance and quality.
Capsules tech blooms
Previously, Catalent released Optigel DR, a design for delayed-release softgel capsules that eliminates the need for a second coating step in the manufacturing process. This is done by combining pectin with gelatin.
In the same space, Cambridge Commodities released capsules featuring palm oil certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (ROSP) and manufactured in sites with approved standards.
Lastly, plant-based materials manufacturer Nexe Innovations and its subsidiary Xoma Superfoods are launching a micro-ground soluble coffee with organic medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) in a fully compostable coffee pod.
