Xoma and Nexe launch soluble organic MCT coffee in fully compostable capsule
02 Feb 2021 --- Plant-based materials manufacturer Nexe Innovations and its subsidiary Xoma Superfoods are launching a micro-ground soluble coffee with organic medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) in a fully compostable coffee pod.
The proprietary pod is suitable for single-serve use in Keurig brewing systems and available from February 5 via Xoma’s website.
“This is an important milestone for us. With almost six years from concept to commercialization, this product will be the first time the public will be able to touch, see and enjoy the great taste that our pod is able to deliver,” says Darren Footz, Nexe Innovations’ co-founder and CEO.
“Consumers will now be able to savor their coffee without the waste associated with typical single-serve beverages. Our Xoma offering, including the packaging, will be environmentally-friendly. Initial demand is strong and we will be expanding our offerings in the near term.”
Xoma Superfoods produces and distributes high-quality coffee and superfood creamers packaged exclusively in single-serve, fully compostable, plant-based pods.
NutritionInsight previously reported on the potential of MCT for mood-boosting applications and Mibelle launched an MCT-based cognition ingredient.
On the sustainability track
This launch is intended to be the first in a series of product releases designed to meet demand from health and environmentally conscious consumers.
The Xoma Superfoods line is designed to combine personal wellness and sustainability in a premium product for health and environmentally-conscious consumers.
The company’s fully compostable plant-based pod is the preferred delivery mechanism for future Xoma products while adhering to Nexe’s environmental, social and corporate governance goals.
With this launch, Nexe aims to set the benchmark for advancing plant-based manufacturing technologies and sustainable consumer goods, the company says.
“We are proud to say that in addition to the US$14.2 million the company raised in its December 2020 financing, Nexe has received more than US$3 million from warrant exercises to date,” notes Ash Guglani, president of the company.
“Nexe remains fully funded to fulfill its capital requirements. Funds raised to date will be used to scale our direct-to-consumer Xoma Superfoods brand as well as continue to bring additional revenue-generating initiatives on-line.”
Other notable launches
Environmental sustainability is increasingly a focus in the single-serve functional beverages and foods space.
Recently, Effusio launched two dissolvable vitamin discs called Prebiotic + and Sleep + that give a variety of drinks a functional boost. Millimeters thin, Effusio’s new vitamin supplements can be stacked on top of each other in a plastic packaging-free carton, demonstrating how functional beverages can be lightweight.
Nespresso also unveiled the first coffee capsules on the market made using 80 percent recycled aluminum in a milestone for the Nestlé Group unit’s circularity ambitions.
The capsules were rolled out in March 2020 for Original Line Master Origin Colombia coffee and will be expanded to other selections from July onwards. By the end of 2021, Nespresso aims to have the full Original Line and Vertuo ranges of coffee capsules made using recycled aluminum.
Lavazza previously introduced Eco Caps, a range of compostable coffee capsules, to address consumers’ rising environmental concerns. To ensure that all coffee capsules are responsibly thrown away, Lavazza is partnering with TerraCycle to launch a free program to provide a composting solution for used coffee capsules in the UK.
Lastly, Lost Sheep Coffee released its single-origin coffee in plant-based capsules that are certified biodegradable, compostable and airtight for freshness.
