Blue Ocean Closures cuts fiber cap prices amid plastic cost surge

Blue Ocean Closures has lowered the price of its fiber-based screw caps, aiming to help brands avoid passing on rising plastic costs to consumers. 

The move diverges from broader market pricing trends, which are increasing due to supply chain disruptions of fossil-based resins. 

“This is a deliberate break from industry logic,” says Lars Sandberg, CEO of Blue Ocean Closures. “While others are forced to raise prices due to fossil-based raw materials, we have built a solution that allows us to lower prices through smarter design, materials, and processes.”

The price reduction also follows technical advancements in material and production processes, says the company. Blue Ocean Closures introduced fiber-based caps onto the market two years ago. It aims to help its customers reduce costs and fossil dependency. 

“We are not discounting our products; we are structurally more efficient,” says Staffan Andersson, chief technical officer at Blue Ocean Closures. “This allows us to lower prices even as the rest of the industry moves in the opposite direction.”

The rise of plastic alternatives

Blue Ocean Closures announcement comes as the US-Iran conflict continues to disrupt petrochemical supply chains. More brands are looking for packaging material options that can withstand global volatility.

“We are seeing a structural shift, where inflation is exposing the limitations of fossil-based materials, and opening the door for better alternatives,” says Sandberg.

“With our price reduction, the cost advantage is increasing and accelerating the shift toward renewable materials.”

Marcel Alberts, founder at Healix, a Netherlands-based clean-tech recycling start-up, recently told Packaging Insights that rising oil prices are pushing packers toward recycled materials.
