Ilapak will be highlighting some of the latest developments in its range of packaging machinery at the 2014 PPMA Show. Innovative packaging solutions from Ilapak, which reduce operating costs and enhance performance and pack presentation and quality, will be shown including the Delta 4000/3SS high speed flowrapper with its own integrated zipper solution, the Carrera 1000/40, a PC-controlled flowrapper designed to cut packaging costs for unsupported fresh produce, the Vegatronic 4000 VFFS machine and Ilapak’s Vegatronic 500 multi head scale and bagging machine.
Hygiene for frozen, wet or fresh foods
A feature of the stand will be the Vegatronic 4000 continuous film motion (CFM) vertical, form, fill and seal (VFFS) machine with open frame design. Ideal for deep-frozen, wet or fresh foods where strict hygiene standards and ease of machine cleaning are a priority, the machine’s open-frame design allows components to be constantly monitored as the frame is fully open and accessible. This ensures fast access for servicing and maintenance, reducing downtime and increasing efficiency and productivity as well as greater hygiene as dirt cannot accumulate. The machine’s continuous film motion concept allows products to be packed without pausing, slowing or stopping the product, ensuring gentler handling, faster production speeds (up to 80ppm) and improved efficiency.

A number of enhancements have been incorporated into the Vegatronic 4000’s design including a new, more robust front safety guard, new rear and side safety guards providing easier access to the machine’s printer area and a redesigned, more hygienic cabinet design for easier cleaning. The Vegatronic 4000 comes with a wide range of pack styles including pillow, block bottom, stand up pouch and Quattro seal bags.
Also on show is the Delta 4000/3SS with zipper solution. This versatile and efficient packaging system is designed to offer manufacturers a high level of flexibility combined with high throughputs, excellent pack presentation and easy open/reclose features in addition to modified atmosphere packaging and hermetic sealing for products such as cheese, sausages, sliced meat and bakery products. The Delta 4000/3SS produces high quality, hermetically sealed, zipper packs in a convenient three sided seal and stand up formats, allowing maximum impact on the supermarket shelf. The Doy-style stand up format historically the preserve of free-flowing products requiring vertical machines can now be made on the Delta 4000 3SCC flowrapper at speeds of up to 150ppm with MAP.
Cuts packing costs of fresh produce
Another important exhibit is the electronic Carrera 1000/40 which cuts packing costs and maximises production line efficiency for fresh produce such as apples, oranges, tomatoes, avocadoes, kiwis, peppers, leeks and spring onions which being difficult to handle products have traditionally required a tray.
The machine is specifically designed to delicately handle unsupported fruit, whilst dramatically reducing the extent that the fruit moves around throughout the packing process. Even if there is a wide variation in the size of the fruit, the Carrera 1000/40’s specially designed product control system allows the packers to effectively use its standard no-product-no-bag, misplaced product detection features and a 64 programme memory for maximising fruit packing line efficiency, in addition to the packaging cost and weight savings
Latest development in the fresh produce area is the machine’s use with the Burg feeding system to produce a new, automated feeding and trayless flowrapping system for apples, enabling packhouses to cut packing costs and improve efficiency capable by packing apples at high speeds of at least 80 packs per minute without bruising or damaging the fruit. Because it is a complete feeding and flowrapping system, it requires fewer operators than a conventional packaging line, improving production efficiency and reducing costs.
Smart gives first time users up to 100 packs per minute
Ideal for first time users of automatic packaging machines, the Smart flowrapper, is a versatile and easy-to-use machine capable of high speeds of up to 100 packs per minute. Smart is ideal for food and non-food products, from bakery products, fresh produce and confectionery to toiletries and medical equipment.
The PC controlled Smart has a colour touch screen operator interface so is exceptionally easy to operate, making product changeovers quick to carry out. It also offers no-product-no-bag, misplaced product detection and automatic size change facilities. Smart is around 30% cheaper than flowrappers of a similar specification, thanks to Ilapak’s commitment to achieving economies of scale and production efficiencies through its global manufacturing platform.
To highlight the wide range of packaging machines offered by Ilapak, the display at the PPMA show will also include a Vegatronic 500 combined multi-head scale and bagging machine with fully integrated control system. A high quality entry level automatic intermittent bagger, the machine is suitable for a large number of applications including confectionery, snacks, nuts, grains, coffee and tea.
