Leading the way in packaging innovation
Greencore was one of the 32 industry representatives which took part in a summit, held in London on July 28th, hosted by WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) together with Environment Minister, Joan Ruddock.
The objective of the summit was to acknowledge the success that has already been achieved as a result of the Courtauld Commitment. This is a voluntary agreement between retailers & manufacturers, WRAP, DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) and the Scottish & Welsh governments, to achieve significant reductions in household packaging and food waste.
It was announced at the summit that the grocery sector has ended packaging growth in the UK, despite increases in overall grocery sales and population growth. This is the first step towards meeting the Courtauld Commitment’s ultimate target of decreasing the amount of packaging waste by 2010.
Greencore has made a number of changes in an effort to reduce its packaging across its sites, including a reduction of plastic packaging for a range of Yorkshire pudding products, produced at its Frozen Foods site in Leeds and a reduction of the weight of the plastic pre-form bottles at the two Greencore Mineral Water facilities in Campsie and Blaen Twyni.
