Mondi opens €200M recycled containerboard mill in Italy

Mondi has opened a new mill in Duino, Italy, after converting its paper machine to a recycled containerboard machine.

Once fully operational, the machine aims to produce 420 metric tons of recycled containerboard, increasing Mondi’s supply security for customers.

According to the company, the mill’s portfolio consists of waste-based fluting, starting with 80 gsm, testliner from 90 gsm upwards, and paper reels from 0.95 m to 3.35 m on Mondi’s widest recycled paper machine. The mill will offer short delivery distances to local markets while serving international customers through nearby ports.

Global supply chain

Over 70 representatives from corrugators across Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa attended Mondi’s mill opening last April. 

The €200 million (US$236 million) investment aims to expand Mondi’s recycled containerboard capacity, drive “long-term value creation and enhance supply chain security.”  

The latest mill in Duino means that Mondi now operates six containerboard mills worldwide.

Recently, Mondi introduced white ink to its digital printing range for corrugated packaging and equipped Ekornes with its paper-based re/cycle CompressWrap that secures high-end mattresses during transport.
