Nestlé Waters is the first global water brand to invest in a ground-breaking, innovative new ‘coating’ technology to enhance the quality of its 50cl S. Pellegrino PET bottles.
The technology coats the internal surface of the bottle with a thin silica film known as silica dioxide. This coating will increase the carbon retention and shelf-life of the drink by three months, provide stronger protection against external factors that can damage the quality of the water, and reduce the amount of PET required in the packaging.
As the 50cl bottles tend to suffer from a faster loss of carbonation than larger bottled water formats, the new technology will help to preserve the sparkling content of S. Pellegrino without changing the shape or colour of the bottle. In addition, improving the performance of the PET bottles means that they are 100% recyclable and that the technology reduces the weight of the sparkling mineral water bottles by up to 17%, having a positive environmental impact.
The S. Pellegrino brand, known for its trend-setting qualities, has been investing in research and development to improve its overall water performance over the past few years, leading to the perfect coating technology solution. It has been authorised by the European Food Safety Authority, American Food & Drug Administration and Italian Health Ministry.
The investment has resulted in the installation of two coating machines in the 50cl bottle production lines located at the S. Pellegrino Terme Plant in Bergamo, Italy. The machines will be operating a line speed of 24,000 bottles per hour to keep up with current customer demand.
