Sanikind’s refillable hand sanitizer spray bottle eliminates germs and single-use plastics
18 Nov 2020 --- US-based company Sanikind is launching what is touted as the first reusable and refillable, plastic-free hand sanitizer spray bottle.
The move comes as COVID-19 prompts a boost in hand sanitizer use, traditionally featuring in single-use plastics packaging.
Made from 100 percent recycled plastic, Sanikind’s personal spray bottle clips on to a key ring, so it can be taken anywhere by the consumer. The sanitizer refill bottles are made of aluminum, an infinitely recyclable material.
“We developed Sanikind to help people always have a convenient bottle of sanitizer and cut down on single-use plastic. The bottle is made out of ocean-bound plastic, collected from the streets, rivers and shores of Haiti and Mexico,” co-founder Miles Pepper tells PackagingInsights.
“By using this material, we turn plastic that would be littering our oceans into a functional product. Since Sanikind is endlessly refillable, it helps cut down on future plastic use as well,” Pepper supports.
Sanikind works with any liquid sanitizer, according to Pepper. “One Sanikind Mini is made of the equivalent of 2.5 plastic bottles and if you use it for a year, you could avoid up to 100 single-use sanitizer bottles depending on how frequently you use sanitizer.”
“Consumers should opt for Sanikind because there really isn’t anything else like it on the market. We think it’s the best sanitizer bottle ever made because it’s endlessly refillable, made of sustainable materials, and is extremely convenient.”
Another eco aspect of the launch is the Sanikind spray bottle holds one fluid-ounce of sanitizer, equating to approximately 250 sprays. It is available in five colors: charcoal, navy, teal, coral and gray.
Sanikind can be purchased on-demand or as a subscription. All shipments are 100 percent plastic-free as Sanikind is vouching to offset its carbon footprint.
Kickstarting sustainability
Sanikind has launched a Kickstarter campaign to help bring the product to market this fall.
Kickstarter backers receive 20 percent off refills of Sanikind for life and the company will donate one bottle of sanitizer to an organization in need for every twenty Sanikind mini spray bottles sold.
“You shouldn’t have to choose between clean hands and clean oceans,” says Pepper. “Experts believe COVID-19 has set us back ten years in terms of reducing plastic consumption and use.”
“Our Kickstarter supporters can help prevent millions of tiny plastic hand sanitizer bottles from ending up in our oceans, which are already being clogged by single-use coronavirus-related waste.”
The company was co-founded by 25-year-old Pepper, who is also the inventor and co-founder of FinalStraw, raising almost US$2 million dollars on Kickstarter in 2018, featuring on Shark Tank and shipping hundreds of thousands of units to consumers.
When the novel coronavirus pandemic hit, Pepper immediately mobilized to create Disinfect Connect, putting distillery-made disinfectant in the hands of over 32,000 frontline healthcare workers, first responders and nursing home staff.
“Hand sanitizer is something you never want to leave home without,” continues Pepper. “By choosing Sanikind, we can do something nice for ourselves, the people around us, and the planet.”
Innovative sanitizer solutions
In the same space, Handy Capsule launched an aluminum-based handbag-type kit. The kit is premolded, creating space for a disposable mask, hand sanitizer, temperature stickers and alcohol wipes – four of the main health and sanitation supplies in increased demand.
Furthermore, UK-based Lifestyle Packaging designed a novel one-hand dispensing mechanism for alcohol-based hand sanitizer coined Snappd. The product is a brandable packaging innovation, developed to deliver a single dose solution with minimal contact when dispensing liquid.
