Styropack Restructures Its Successful UK Operation
We achieved new business wins worth £1.8 million and we are continuing our investment programme with new machines for our Glasgow site and a new prototyping machine for our design centre in Blackburn.
13/01/07 Styropack UK Ltd, the leading producer of protective packaging in the UK, announced its intention to close its production plant in Aberdare, South Wales on 30 March 2007. This follows the closure of several large manufacturers in the region including Sony TV, LG, Panasonic TV, and a large reduction in volume at Orion Electric.
In addition to the Aberdare site, Styropack has another five production plants strategically placed around the UK: “These sites will provide a continuation of service to customers that are currently supplied by the Aberdare plant, where viable” says Gavin Birnie, Managing Director, Styropack UK Ltd.
“Over the next few days, we will contact our Aberdare customers to explain how the handover of supply might be organised,” continues Birnie. “I can personally assure our customers that we will do everything possible to maintain supply in the short-term, and where possible in the future too.
“We very much regret the impact this decision will have on the 12 employees at the site, we are currently discussing the situation with them and have begun a consultation process to examine all our options.”
The closure in Aberdare does not reflect the performance of Styropack nationally as Birnie explains: “Despite this sad news for the Aberdare site, I am very pleased with our performance in 2006. We achieved new business wins worth £1.8 million and we are continuing our investment programme with new machines for our Glasgow site and a new prototyping machine for our design centre in Blackburn.
“Our innovative approach to products — both in design and manufacturing — has kept us in pole position in the market place and we intend to ensure that our customers continue to benefit from cost effective packaging solutions across the UK,” concludes Birnie.
