New recycling fundraising contest offers £500 of charity prizes to the collectors who can save the most waste biscuit wrappers from UK landfill.
TerraCycle and McVitie’s® are excited to announce the launch of a new competition - the Wrappers to Riches Collection Contest. There are a combined 50,000 TerraCycle points (£500 worth) in prizes to be won! The Wrappers to Riches Collection Contest is a new recycling fundraising competition which encourages people across the UK to collect and send in waste biscuit wrappers, otherwise destined for landfill, to be recycled into new products.
Every active McVitie’s® Biscuit Wrapper Brigade® location is automatically entered into the contest. At the end of the competition, the twenty top collectors will win contributions of £125, £75, £25, or £10 to their chosen school, charity or non-profit organisation. In addition the Grand Prize winning location and First Runner Up will also receive a McVitie’s goodie bag full of biscuits.
As well as working towards becoming the Wrapper to Riches Collection Contest Champions each participant in the McVitie’s® Biscuit Wrapper Brigade® earns four TerraCycle points (normally two) for the weight of each biscuit wrapper of any brand sent in for recycling during the contest dates. Each point can be redeemed for a 1 pence contribution for the school, charity or non-profit organization of the sender’s choice.
The contest runs from Monday 3rd February 2014 at 9am to Wednesday 30th April 2014 at 6pm. Anyone interested in entering the Wrappers to Riches Collection Contest simply goes to the TerraCycle website and joins the McVitie’s Biscuit Wrapper Brigade. Freepost labels can then be downloaded to send in shipments of used biscuit wrappers. Regular Top Twenty Leaderboards and Facebook updates will be made throughout the contest by TerraCycle so participants can see how well they are doing.
Saving Used Biscuit Wrappers from Landfill and Raising Funds for Charity
Whilst biscuit wrappers are recyclable, very little mixed plastic recycling is carried out by local council kerb side collections, as they simply do not have the infrastructure. This results in billions of biscuit wrappers needlessly being sent to UK landfill. This prompted McVitie’s and recycling experts TerraCycle to join together in June 2012 to launch an innovative solution for UK consumers in the form of the McVitie’s Biscuit Wrapper Brigade. The scheme encourages consumers across the UK to help end this enormous waste of resources by sending in any brand of used biscuit wrappers to be recycled into everyday products such as watering cans, garden benches and waste bins.
