Tudor Wines, a US based boutique maker of California pinot noirs, has begun using a tamper-proof device called Bubble Tag Authentication Seal, a product of French firm Prooftag, to help its loyal consumers recognize its authenticate wines from fake ones.
The Central Coast-based winemaker said each bottle of its pinot noir will bear the tamper-proof device which is about 1sqcm in size.
This tag will feature a unique pattern of micro-bubbles. Customers who want to buy the wine will be able to quickly authenticate each bottle online by using a computer or a smartphone app.
Millions of fake wines in correctly labeled bottles are sold every year, according to some wine industry regulatory bodies.
The Tudor wines boast ratings of 90 points and higher, and have presence in both domestic and foreign markets, with price tags of as much as $500 a bottle in some Asian localities.
Tudor Wines said that although there are no reports of its wines being counterfeited, it has decided to take a step ahead as a precautionary measure to avoid potential problems in future.
The winemaker has joined with other key winemakers such as Chateau Montelena, Blankiet Estates, Clos de la Roche, Canon la Gaffeliere and Louis Latour.
Tudor Wines said shipments of these bottles will be initially sent to Asia and later to all other domestic locations.
