CCL Label has introduced SmartCask (by Checkpoint), a next-generation identification and data platform designed to make whisky cask management more secure and transparent. Checkpoint Systems is a division of CCL industries, providing technologies for retail merchandizing, loss prevention, and inventory management, with a specialization in RFID and RF solutions.
SmartCask integrates “robust, long-life” data chips onto individual casks, offering a digital identity that is said to endure for decades. Under standard storage conditions, the technology is engineered to last up to 30 years.
The lifespan of the technology can reach 50 years when stored within a temperature range of -20 degrees Celsius to 40 degrees Celsius.

“At CCL Label, we believe trust and authenticity are fundamental to the spirits industry. As the world’s largest label company and a trusted partner to premium brands globally, we are committed to delivering technologies that protect product integrity and provenance,” says the company.
“SmartCask supports the sector’s growing demand for secure digital traceability, contributing to improved transparency and stronger confidence across the value chain. It aligns with emerging digital passport initiatives and provides a foundation for reliable ownership verification, a critical step in restoring trust within the global whisky investment landscape.”
Advancing tracking and data management
CCL Label says each chip serves as a permanent digital passport, storing verifiable information on cask origin, contents, ownership, and movement throughout its lifecycle.
SmartCask combines hardware, software, and structured data management within a scalable ecosystem, enabling distilleries, warehouses, and brand owners to keep a clear oversight of their cask inventories. From filling to maturation, every stage can be authenticated and audited with confidence.
The technology behind SmartCask is developed for long-term reliability, with data integrity maintained across the full lifespan of a whisky cask. It aims to create a secure and accessible platform that helps the industry transition from paper-based records to a digital, tamper-resistant system.
CCL Label will join forces with the Scotch Whisky Association and distillers to enhance the alcohol’s performance while safeguarding heritage.
In the European market, last year, CCL Label launched a range of PP lids, in mould labels, stretch sleeves, and monomaterial pouches to help dairy companies comply with the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation.
