Mondi has released a new white paper highlighting how fit-for-purpose packaging can support food producers and retailers, protect product quality, and cut waste across supply chains.
The paper, “Turning Packaging into a Competitive Advantage in the Food Supply Chain,” reveals that handling pressures and packaging performance challenges in complex supply chains can result in product loss, disruption, and brand damage.
According to the research, 70% of consumers will not purchase visibly damaged products, adding pressure on producers and retailers to maintain on-shelf presentation.
Paulus Goëss, chief operating officer for Corrugated Solutions at Mondi, says: “Packaging plays a vital role in preventing food waste. When designed strategically, it helps protect product value, support reliable operations, and reduce the hidden costs that often accumulate under challenging supply chain conditions.”
Corrugated solutions for food waste
The white paper aims to assist food producers, retailers, and logistics partners in strengthening the business case for viewing corrugated packaging as a “strategic tool for waste reduction and supply chain resilience.”
The white paper highlights how well-designed corrugated solutions can enhance stability, withstand stacking pressure, accelerate packing processes, and maintain product integrity for long and complex distribution routes.
The findings are said to offer practical guidance that helps food businesses in improving supply chain resilience, managing category-specific challenges, and reducing waste-related losses.
According to Mondi, the approaches outlined in the white paper can be applied across categories — from fresh produce, snacks, and confectionery to chilled goods.
Last month, Mondi joined forces with Prymat, a Polish dried seasoning manufacturer, to develop paper-based packaging that protects its aromatic spices. The packaging was created with Mondi’s re/cycle FunctionalBarrier Paper Ultimate.
The company also brought corrugated packaging for fruit and vegetables to the Central and Western European markets with corrugated cardboard packaging and paperboard manufacturer Pacapime Hungary.
