DS Smith has developed corrugated cardboard packaging for a Dutch company offering trees as gifts for special occasions such as births. Geefeenboompje.nl’s range of e-commerce tree gift products required a solution to optimize the functional performance of the design.
Remko Slokkers, co-founder at Geefeenboompje.nl, says: “The strength of DS Smith lies in their ability to think and conceptualize along with you, and they fully understand what is needed now and equally importantly, the challenges that an expanding business will face in a few years’ time.”
DS Smith explains that its packaging solution facilitates supply chain efficiency and reduces costs. It used a die-cut technique to incorporate air holes positioned to improve aeration for the tree.

“The improved packaging and material usage enhance the efficiency of the packing process and support a more streamlined supply chain approach. It turned out to be financially uninteresting to look only at the price of a box. By placing our focus on process optimization, we achieve greater savings in storage, handling, and labor. The original box was cheaper, but less efficient,” Slokkers adds.
Aligned on design
The packaging is said to be made from fully recyclable materials.
“The overall esthetic of the design has been enhanced for visual impact, and the solution can be branded with a logo and a personalized message on the exterior surface. In addition, Geefeenboompje.nl provides customers with options around a paper-based sleeve,” DS Smith outlines.
The company further highlights that the fiber-based packaging and tree gifts align in appearance and “unboxing experience,” with the design “reinforcing” the messaging and ethos of Geefeenboompje.nl.
The Dutch tree gift company says that the product is a symbol of growth and development. It also has ranges offering gift sets and letterbox-friendly tree growing kits. It is said to have contributed to the planting of more than 300,000 trees.
Recently, DS Smith provided a custom fiber-based tray for transatlantic fresh produce transportation, recyclable cardboard inserts for roller shutter motors, recyclable fiber-based boxes for Absolute Vodka, and cardboard packaging for a home fragrance line.
