Yangi debuts dry-formed fiber foodservice trays for festivals
Key takeaways
- Yangi has introduced its dry-formed fiber takeaway trays publicly through Sweden-based food truck caterer Flavor Boss.
- The plastic-free trays are designed for quick-serve foodservice, offering moisture and oil resistance for greasy foods.
- Yangi says its dry-forming technology reduces reliance on water-intensive wet molding and supports compatibility with paper recycling streams.
Yangi has equipped food truck caterer Flavor Boss with its fiber-based trays, marking the first “public introduction” of Yangi’s quick-serve range, which also includes lids, bowls, and plates.
The plastic-free takeaway trays, produced in Varberg, Sweden, are said to offer moisture and oil resistance from greasy foods.
Anna Altner, founder of Yangi, says: “Seeing Yangi trays being used to serve real customers is a proud moment for our team. Years of research, engineering, product development, and controlled production have led to this point. It is a powerful demonstration that dry-formed packaging is entering the world in a real way.”
In a recent interview with Packaging Insights, Hanna Rüdel, chief commercial officer at Yangi, told us that while wet-molded fiber is one way to achieve fiber-based packaging, Yangi’s Cellera range, which features dry-formed fiber, combines airlaid fiber technology with 3D thermoforming, eliminating the “water-intensive” wet pulp stage.
Yangi’s dry-forming technology also produces solutions compatible with existing paper recycling streams. The packager says that its solutions are designed to replace single-use plastic in food service settings, whilst still maintaining performance and stability.
Patricia Dianda, owner at Flavor Boss, adds: “These trays are brilliant for a busy service. They come apart easily — no fussing with trays sticking together — they look great, and most importantly, they’re sturdy enough that people can walk around a festival with a full tray in one hand without it giving way.”
Scaling the fiber-based tray
The company highlights that its industrial demo line in Varberg enables retailers with a “practical route” to trial dry-formed fiber packaging in real-world conditions.
Recently, Yangi commissioned its first Cellera machine platform at a European converter’s production site to scale the commercial manufacturing of its dry forming technology.
Yangi launched its production-ready dry-formed fiber tray for meat, fish, deli, and ready meals in February. The tray is made of renewable fibers and is PFAS-free, featuring a functional laminate applied selectively to high-demand applications.
